Everyone has 12 Chakras, but 7 of them are the basic ones that are commonly known and talked about. The 7 are the ones we use every day that you probably don't even know you use. Now before I get into all this, what is a chakra? The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word for “disk” or "wheel". In Ayurvedic medicine, illnesses are seen as having an energy blockage. Depending on where the illness is located yogis would work on the chakra that was blocked and even the ones around it. This is why it is important to often keep your chakras aligned.

The first chakra is the Root Chakra. It sits at the base of your tailbone and is the center of your stability. Often when it is not aligned you feel off-balanced. You can also feel nervous and scared. Emotionally you can have trust issues and often feel fatigued. Physical issues that can arise are constipation, eating disorders, and problems with all the body parts just below the chakra. When balanced you feel at peace and safe with who you are. This chakra is also associated with the color red and is the “I Am”.

The second chakra is the Sacral and located between the reproductive organs. The color associated with it is orange. This is the chakra that brings about your sense of creative potential and inspiration. It is also the location of the “I Feel”. When it is not balanced you feel depressed and lazy. You have a complete loss of interest in creating or doing. You can also be constipated or have lower back pain. For some, fertility is difficult. When Sacral is balanced nothing can stop you from creating or doing what you love. You enjoy life and create pleasure with almost anything.

The third one is the Solar Plexus. It is located just above your belly button. It is the powerhouse to the “I Do”. When balanced you are confident that you are capable of anything. When it is not you can either have low self-esteem or overly confidence you might even become a little aggressive with words and actions. Since this chakra is associated with powerhouse it is the color of yellow like the sun.

The middle, the fourth, chakra is the Heart Chakra and the "I Love". It sits in the middle of your chest and is the color green. Because it is set in the middle it is the bridge from the bottom three to the top three and vice versa. You can probably guess what this chakra is all about. If you guessed love, you are absolutely correct. When this chakra is aligned it is allowing love and compassion to flow in and out of you effortlessly. You are able to give love and receive love while still maintaining your boundaries. When the heart is not aligned you will have a lack of empathy and tend to play victimology real hard. You can also be anti-social or have no awareness of personal boundaries and tend to over help others for your own personal growth. Some physical struggles when not aligned is respiratory problems or cardiovascular problems.

The fifth is the Throat Chakra. Like the last one this chakra “speaks” for itself, pun intended. It is located in the middle of your neck and controls the communication aspect of your life. Because it is communication, it is associated with the color air, blue. If this chakra is not in balance, the listening skill is lacking, you tend to listen to be able to speak back. You can also say too much or even too little. Oftentimes, what you are wanting to say does not come out with the right intention. Physically you can have dental problems and mouth ulcers and even sore throats. Once it is aligned you are able to speak your truth while being mindful of others.

The sixth chakra is the Third Eye. It is set in the middle of your brows and the color of indigo. It is the chakra that is the “I See”. It helps to find clarity when and where needed and allows you to grow in your spiritual endeavors for the greatest good. When there is a blockage you feel stuck and cannot see a greater future for yourself. You also reject everything spiritual that goes beyond what you already know and already have accepted to be true and you have a hard time accepting others’ views and beliefs. Physically, you can have intense migraines, seizures, and even poor vision.

Last but not least is the Crown Chakra. This chakra is the gateway to wisdom, the “I Know”. It is located just a few inches above the head and the color is purple. It is believed to be the gateway to enlightenment. It is where your connection to spirituality has clarity and continues to grow even brighter and bigger. When blocked or unbalanced you have a lack of direction and goals you set, if set, are never met. This can also create depression and cause you to go into deep isolation. The physical problems when blocked are insomnia, nerve issues, and migraines.

Now that I have gone over a little on each of them, please know that not all issues I have expressed are not limited. There are more for each and you may only have just a few at a time or none at all. When it comes to all 7 of them, depending on the alignment it can actually predict how your day is going to go or how might a situation of yours might play out. It is important to know that every day is going to be different which means every day your alignment is going to be different. For example, yesterday my Sacral Chakra was off and today my Throat Chakra is off. You are probably asking how do I know which one of them is off and how do I balance it out? First I would do more learning about each of them and also get to know each of your chakras personally. You can do this by laying down or sitting with no one else around you to disturb you. Place your dominant hand on each chakra one at a time and ask it how it is doing and how it feels. It might help to have some paper and pen with you to write down your answers. Remember, there is no such thing as a right or wrong answer. Only you know your body and what it is telling you. Go with what first comes to mind. It doesn't have to make sense at first, but the more you do this the stronger the connection and the easier it is to read it. As you learn more about chakras and have a deeper connection to yours you can start intuitively knowing which ones need an adjustment. As for the how-to align them, there are many different ways. You can wear the color, eat the food of the color, receive a chakra alignment, or mediate with the focus of releasing and expanding the chakra you are wanting to work on. There are other ways, but those are the most common ones.
